The problem with crime scene DNA is backlogged cases. Cold cases tend to sit the longest while urgent gets done more quickly.

I had my DNA done and it sat for a few weeks, but it only took two days to be extracted and analyzed.

You can actually precipitate your own DNA at home using saliva, alcohol, soap and food dye. It takes about 1/2 hour. In this case, they had blood which contains more DNA than saliva.
