Nauseating to think that the president of a world power is a sadist and, what’s more, that he was voted into power in a democracy.

Democracy has been the least bad system of governance available. Probably still is. But if monsters like this can rise to power within a democracy, I worry that people will lose faith in the system and start entertaining alternatives that are likely to have even worse outcomes; more authoritarian. The only thing that has managed to keep him restrained so far is a well-established system of checks and balances.
