before them.

That said, 2016 was also a very strong economy and Trump managed to make it a "change" election. Part of the problem is that the only political language we have for unhappiness is economic. People are lonely, depressed, and anxious, so they convince themselves it's an economic rather than social problem, even when it isn't. We may have an "in" that way.
