As of now, Medicare, the largest payer for medical services, is legally prohibited from negotiating medicine prices on behalf of their customers. Private insurers are not barred from negotiations and do so regularly.

If Medicare was the only payer for services, then they would likely have the power to tell drug companies how much they are willing to pay for medications and it would likely bring down the price of the medication you need.
