(11,728 posts)As others have said, research is showing that China is particularly vulnerable to being the focal point of diseases because of their unregulated animal markets.
They have huge markets where wild animals are caught and sold as food. There have been a few articles on the situation. There is some belief that the wild animals are fresher than farmed animals. When you interact with wild animals you expose yourself to greater possibility for novel infections.
Corona viruses are a family of viruses that are pretty robust and which adapt and mutate quickly. The common cold is typically a rhinovirus or a coronavirus. SARS and MERS are also coronaviruses. With all of the trade that happens with China, anything that forms there and is even moderately contagious is going to spread based solely on the volume of contact. With COVID-19's ability to remain active on surfaces for up to 3 days, it makes it all the worse.
