Not all of my personal connections make it into office by a long shot, by the way. Ever since my grandmother was a big NYC fundraiser for the senatorial campaign of the mayor of Minneapolis in 1948 (his name was Humphrey), my family has had connections to the "Minnesota Democratic Mafia." That didn't exactly help Fritz Mondale in 1984. My friend (and fellow 12 string guitarist) Howard Dean had a short but unsuccessful run at the presidency 20 years later, although Howard's leadership of the DNC did reverse the party's fortunes drastically in 2006 and then 2008.
Still, I feel good about the chances of both Mark for Senate in Arizona and Valerie for the House in New Mexico. With any luck, Wendy Davis will get into the House from Texas as well. I have supported her since her run for governor, although at the time, it was a hopeless cause. That may not get me into a position where I can get bills I like introduced in Congress, but it will still be nice to have a few more people on Capitol Hill I can call by their first names!
