Manipulating stock prices with buybacks and layoffs and other accounting tricks does not have any relation to the overall health of the economy. When 20% of the population is unemployed and another large chunk still planning to avoid leaving home for anything but bare necessities for the foreseeable future, there is bound to be a major hit to consumer spending and corporate revenue.
