I think they're the main reason that most white evangelical Christians vote for Republicans now.

Jimmy Carter was popular among the evangelicals UNTIL he proposed taxing religious groups.

Here's the electoral college map of 1976 (Carter winning the blue states):

That was AFTER the Civil Rights bills of the 60's and after Roe v. Wade.

Taxing religious groups turned the church leaders against him, and their flocks soon followed.
