6. The countermeasures: Wear a mask and maintain social distance

Sep 2020

These are not countermeasures requiring any expertise or prohibitively expensive equipment. Anyone can easily mask up (My wife, the quilter, made and distributed more than 200 cloth masks; her friends made thousands more. For free.) and if you can visualize six feet, you can stay away from other people.

For months, beginning in January, Trump ginned up nontroversies about masking and distancing. Millions of Americans gladly cited Trump as their reason for refusing to take these simple countermeasures. Millions of Americans got sick, tens of thousands died. All the while, Trump studiously kept the federal government out of assisting Americans, turning his back on the suffering and the death. In private, he told his intimates that he knew his actions were killing people; in public he told the American people they didn't need to listen to public health and medical professionals to stem the spread of the virus. Is your blood boiling yet?

For months, not one of the folks who witnessed the difference between Trump in private and Trump in public said a word.
