They held meetings in their homes, some in secrecy, and held suppers where all were treated as equals. They were leaders, too. In the Roman catacombs, among portraits of early bishops, are some women whose names have been changed to the masculine form or effaced.

St Paul was a misogynist, sad to say, and had a huge influence on the development of the church as time went on: I think it was he who told women to submit to their husbands. But note that he came after Jesus, and nowhere in the teachings of Jesus do you find this misogyny.

If the Federalists are such freaking “textualists” and “originalists,” they might start there.
