(5,017 posts)I love the physical entity that is this country. I've loved the privilege that being a citizen of this country used to mean outside of this country. I love the freedoms we were supposed to have but never really, truly have had - but I've loved that we mostly pushed the country closer to those freedoms. I've always loved the diversity of the population and hated it when I was living in places where all I saw were other white people. However, I've lived outside of this country in or near places were we've been our worst selves to every have loved our foreign policy or to have loved our rabid imperialism! I've also never loved the xenophobia and arrogant ethnocentrism even though I think I understand where it comes from. I've truly hated how our country was founded including hated that my ancestors played a major role in genocide.
On edit - but, then, no country is perfect. I know some Canadians and some of their laws are incredibly draconian and just as vicious in terms of their effect on the person being punished as ours!
