When I worked at NBC Radio, he’d show up regularly on the third floor where the network news ops were based.

Above the waist: nice clean ironed white shirt and necktie. And proper, well-fitting suit jacket. And perfect hair.

Below the waist: rumpled shorts, ratty sneakers and socks, and lots of hairy leg. Because when he did his standup, he was always shot close-up, maybe at most, from mid-chest-level, OR seated behind an anchor desk.

Sometimes David Letterman would wander in, to voice a regular feature for the radio network. Hell, he didn’t even bother to tidy up above the waist. Old baggy sweat pants and sweat shirt with a - um - “relaxed” neckline, and hair that hadn’t seen a comb for what looked like several days. He ALWAYS looked like he’d just rolled (not climbed, ROLLED) out of bed. What you could get away with, if you were on the radio!
