(1,725 posts)I get that, and I agree. But it was about Smucker's owning a piss-poor junk dog food company that makes dogs and cats ill and shortens their lives. Since Smuckers is an Ohio company (but not in her district - it's in a bright red district ), I emailed her asking if she could help with a law that would force the FDA to make it illegal for dog food makers to include rendered meat in their food - currently, the law only requires that every ingredient must be listed on the food bag, but not the quality of that ingredient. Any bag that lists "meat" or "meat meal" or "meat by-products" means it is rendered meat: road kill, vet remains - yes, sick dogs and cats, that's how the tags get found in wet dog food - and rotten meat from grocery stores. Render factories take this meat, cook it, sell it cheaply to dog food factories... and that's what our pets eat when we buy dog food that has "meat" as an ingredient. I was hoping she could take up the cause, or forward it to a colleague who would. She gently blew me off. I would have taken just a referral to some group who could - or is - working on it, but nada. So... But I don't rate her completely on that; that was obviously my personal regret, not related to what she does for people.
