(10,828 posts)I've followed this virus since last January--the spread, the death toll, the initial obfuscation about the danger. I've kept current with all the subsequent articles on Trump and his enablers' failures, lies and reckless disregard. Still, reading this timeline, a summary of the missteps, the blatant incompetence and cruelty is breath-taking pressed against the hundred of thousands who have suffered and died.
There are heroes and heroines in the mix, members of the medical and scientific community who worked tirelessly in the trenches, others behind the scenes trying their best to mitigate the disaster. I even came away with a different perspective on Dr. Birx. Though her silence during Trump's bleach speech remains unforgivable, she did try to educate, move and persuade members of the Administration. To no avail. But she did try, receiving scorn for the effort. Then she and a colleague spent the late summer and fall crisscrossing the country advocating basic public health measures with state and local officials. In that endeavor they did have a measure of success convincing several red state governors to push mask-wearing among their citizens. Their road trip reminded me of similar medical efforts overseas where doctors and public health officials go into remote areas to press for basic hygiene and vaccination programs. Sadly, that's where the US is in 2020.
Anyway a good, worthwhile read.
