...the true impediment to third parties in U.S. politics has been our president-oriented, first-past-the-post political system that pretty much guarantees that a third party set up on one side of the political spectrum will result in the victory of the party most diametrically opposed to them. by splitting the vote on their own side. If, somehow, we were to transform our political to a parliamentary one with instant-runoff voting, you'd see a multitude of small parties suddenly becoming viable -- but, of course, such a transformation is virtually inconceivable.
