3. Trump is a means to an end for them

I think the deep-seated hatred and resentment was already there for many conservatives to begin with. Trump just legitimized it. I think one in four Americans have always been like this, wanting an excuse to take that feeling of resentment out on others, but for the most part, they learned to disguise it because they had to live with others who didn't feel that way - and they have generally been egged on by hard-right media, which represents interests that do want to see a weak Federal state.
