among Norse people (Scandinavia and northern Germanic tribes). Each rune symbolized a sound and was also a symbol, by itself, for a concept. Runes existed centuries before Nazism and were eventually replaced by the Roman alphabet.

The odal rune being used today by neo Nazis was used by a division of the Gestapo as a symbol worn on their collar instead of the SS that looked like lightning strikes on the uniforms of regular Gestapo.

In the old system of runic writing, the odal rune symbolized the concepts of inheritance, tradition, persistence, and unity. Nazis believed that the Nazi movement represented the traditions of a "golden age" of Aryan purity and reached into the past for their symbols.

The swastika today has such an immediate negative reaction from most people that the neo Nazis of today prefer the less well known odal that was once used by a Gestapo division.
