Arabic math comes in handy!

The word "algebra" comes from the Arabic "al jabr", the reunion of broken parts, ie. the healing of a broken bone. So the great basketball player Kareem Abdul Jabbar's last name is actually the same word as "algebra", and he solved some pretty tough equations on court. Often words that start with "al-" are Arabic in origin, as it is the definite article, "the": alcohol, alchemy, alfalfa, Alcatraz - but not Alabama!
