Parallels between Georgia and Ireland. [View all]

Being Irish, with, more specifically, some Northern Ireland Catholic background recent events in Georgia spark off a searing race memory (the most relevant part being the 4th paragraph):

Personally I think the whole thing could backfire. I note a 77% disapproval rating in a Georgian opinion poll which must include many republicans. Not a few blue collar republicans will not be impressed by the 'driver's licence' rule. This reincarnation of Jim Crow will push conservative African Americans back into the Democratic fold. And I can't think of anything more likely to fire up the general African American base in Georgia and elsewhere than Jim Crow mark 2.
I see Kemp accused Rep. Park Cannon of kicking a policeman. Can she not sue him? Are there not libel laws in Georgia?
Someone as resourceful and tenacious as Stacey Abrams is probably figuring out how to bypass all this stuff: 'bring bottles with you' campaigns, water cooler stations, license registration drives...
If you are curious, the voter suppression laws alluded to in the above link were duly overturned and Catholics are close to being a voting majority in Northern Ireland.
