(1,004 posts)In the lead up to the election, so late summer/fall 2020, remember how often Trump and other Republicans used the phrase "urban unrest?" How about "defund the police?" They also focused on school closures in the 2020-21 school year. All of it was designed to scare moderate(ish) white women into voting for Trump.
But the coup de grace was Trump's focus on what "liberals" were trying to do to suburbs. ALL of it was horseshit. This was not a broad, national message. It was highly targeted and was actually the backbone of his entire 2020 campaign. I work in housing and I can't tell you exactly how much money they spent on social media targeting with that message, (it was well into the nine-figure range, seriously), but we were constantly fighting that messaging as it was EVERYWHERE.
That was his strategy: Terrorize people with lies and hope enough vote for him. It worked to a degree, but ultimately, it failed....just like his presidency.
