(128,813 posts)I was also in 1st grade - had just turned 6 a few months earlier, and that same week just after the assassination, the school had asked if anyone had anything that referenced MLK to use as a sortof makeshift memorial, and my parents happened to have had a print that was part of a stylized series of water colors sold to them by one of their neighbors, that documented various moments and aspects of the Civil Rights Movement. The one they had included a description on the back mentioning Rosa Parks but featured central image of MLK, with other images of protesters around the outer edge. It was offered to the school for a special assembly that they had. The framed print ended up on an easel in the middle of the stage in the auditorium with a black sash draped around it.
As a fed at the time of 9/11, everyone was watching it on the TV in one of the conference rooms. We had all been through the major change in security posture after the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995 and figured what we would be in for this go-around. And not long after 10 am ET, they told us to go home, and I headed to my mom's, going like 70 mph on my usual commute out of the downtown area while listening to the radio in the car as Dan Rather was covering the event, when he eventually and incredulously reported the 2nd tower falling.
One of my cousins worked in one of the towers at the time but she ended up taking off work that day by odd circumstance (she lived in Jersey and normally commuted there every day).
