"West Side Story" is perhaps my favorite musical, and I cherish the original movie, so I was skeptical when I heard Spielberg was doing a remake, but it really is a good update. The original involves people in brownface, so it's not like it's without its flaws. Also, this movie's producers have said that it's not really a remake of the original movie but instead uses the stage version as its primary source material.
I suspect "West Side Story" will win some awards this year, and it may re-generate some interest. It's a good reminder to artists that market success doesn't determine how worthy your work is. Even "Citizen Kane" failed to recoup its costs.
The crowd was exceptionally small, so we had no qualms about seeing it in person. Honestly, if people are vaxxed/boosted and can stay masked the whole time, they should feel no shame going out and doing things in public.
