I think Rogersville changed hands over 3 times and Franklin county, not a county anymore, didn't like the South and didn't like the North and seceded from the sucession. Then the Confederacy sent in troops to make them behave.
There's an old church up the way that has slave grave markers in the front of the cemetery. Most people in East TN were too poor to own slaves so I think they were buried there because they died on the underground railroad. It's not clear why they were so honored.
East Tennessee has always been rebellious.
