Actually, they do it electronically, so it's even faster. Someone types in your Social Security number and the amount and probably scans the check and it's done.

Refunds are different. Before issuing the refund, they check your filing for errors, so someone has to actually look at your 1040. That's why that process is slower.

If you e-file, that should speed up the processing, since the return can be checked by software. If you mail it, that's something else. Someone has to open your envelope, check to see if you signed, and then the return is reviews for errors and completeness. Any review of your filing comes later. Then, someone enters your information and a refund is ordered. Printing and mailing of the checks is automated, but there is definitely some human interaction in the processing.
