In reply to the discussion: Mask up everyone! NOW! [View all]Ms. Toad
(33,992 posts)96. I've been continuing to mask -
and the rates are about 4 times the level at which I would feel comfortable unmasked (once we hit 50/100,000 over 14 days).
BUT it isn't true that cases are universally spiking. The US is not uniform in terms of COVID waves In my county, we seem to have hit the peak at the end of May - with cases decreasing since then. We're down from 400 cases/100,000 over 14 days to 300 cases/100,000 over 14 days. (Now - there is a slight upturn from 298,000 to 303,000 in the last few days - but the tail end of a reporting week is hard to judge since those numbers are often adjusted in the next reporting.)

I am also 4x vaxxed. But if you get the wrong combo of variant and genetics, that don't mean squat.

The vaccines still protect against severe outcomes, but aren't very effective against infection.

Just think about seasonal flu, which has been largely supressed because of masking.

The article is not talking about long haul Covid. It's talking about two new variants of Omicron
