I left that other descriptor off, and it should have been there.
In most parts of this country, gay men were not out in 1962. I graduated from high school in 1963, and did not know of a single gay man in my city or school. It wasn't until I moved away from the small town I lived in that I met anyone who was out as GLBT. I'm sure there were the same percentage then, but they could not reveal that they were gay or lesbian safely in most places.
