9. Went through the top secret clearance

process to work on the introduction of a new classified Navy aircraft. Never got the clearance because SecDef Cheney cancelled the program before it got off the ground. Before that happened, though, the plans were to build a SCIF in another building on our compound where the team would work. And we were only managing spare parts information, not seeing or handling them.

I recall having to go to an interview in Washington and having to list just about every facet of my very mundane life. I remember the interviewer telling me that Soviet spies might be sending little remote-controlled listening devices through the duct work to hear whatever was said.

Even on unclassified aircraft, there were classified systems like the AWG-9/APG-71 radar for the F-14's Phoenix missile system. These kind of parts were kept seperate from other parts in their own classified material locker.
