That said, I'm fairly certain that as a child I was told that the title continues into retirement. "President Kennedy" was long dead when I was told this, but he wasn't "Senator Kennedy". He was "President Kennedy", even if he was dead and Johnson or Nixon was in the WH.

Note that this rules out "former president" as a title. Unless we want "former president FDR" and "former president Kennedy." "Former president Senator Kennedy". It lacks panache.

Not sure I like "Senator Obama", to be honest, as the One True Title for the man.

Then again, we have to "fucking stop calling him" "President Obama." Because there can be only one, per Ms. Manners.
