(4,475 posts)I vote in a very urban, 60% African-American precinct. When I arrived at 7:30 am, there was already a 15 minute line. It was about twice that long when I left at 7:50 or so. I've been voting in this precinct for about 6 years and this was definitely the biggest early am turnout I've seen so far. People were upbeat and polite and there were no complaints about the wait.
There were a couple of people standing outside the voting area. One was shilling for a Democratic state representative, and the other appeared to be perhaps some kind of poll watcher but she was wearing a Steelworkers Union official vest and was friendly and polite. There did not appear to be anybody there attempting to discourage minority voters or anything like that.
On Edit: Oh, also! I just found out this morning that a good friend who is a moderate conservative (not the crazy kind, which is why we are still friends) is NOT voting for Romney this year. It's probably the first time ever in her life that she has not voted (R) for President. She didn't say who she *was* voting for, and I didn't press her, but she said she wasn't voting for Romney. She's in rural New York state. I suspect there are more like her out there.
