being politically aware of societal racism (being awoke to it) and the recognition of the need to navigate around obstacles constantly placed it the path of Black people and other POCs/LGBTQ+. Thus, woke.

Magats eventually got wind of it and turned it into a pejorative to use against any program, issue, proposal, legislative bill, movement etc. that has empathy towards the less fortunate in society. As was said, a sly way to be racist without being blatant about it.
