At the Gridiron Dinner in 1995, when Bill Clinton was down with the Republican success in the 1994 midterms, and Gingrich was riding high as the new nasty aggressive House Speaker, when Clinton gave his speech, he gave it with his usual mastery, had the room eating out of his hand. Gingrich leaned over to tell my mom, seated next to him, and said, “anyone who thinks this guy is gonna be a pushover for re-election is fooling themself.” No matter how much he said in public that his “contract with America” would be Clinton’s political graveyard, he knew that Clinton was a formidable, skilled political opponent who would probably coast to re-election no matter what the Republicans threw at him.
