(4,741 posts)Costs more than heating, in more ways that one. Install a wood or pellet stove, and your costs go down even more. You can also get by with keeping thermostats lower in winter in the north than you can with setting an AC thermostat higher in the South. You can always put on more clothes and get under a blanket up north if you're cold inside. You can take off only so many clothes if you leave your house in the summer.
Whenever I've been in the South during summer, the AC was running constantly, even with a thermostat set to 85. Only at night did it start running less often. And even then... I was in Texas that awful summer of 2008 or 2009--whichever summer it was that was so bad that they were praying for rain. It was 95-98 outside at 7 pm, nearly every day we were there. I know because I was giving my mother's neighbor a lift to her job every day at that time while her car was in the shop. Her AC died because it literally ran itself to death. I think our AC finally turned off for a bit at around, oh, 3 am., which is when I left to get that woman from her job.
Give me cold, anytime. I can deal with that, but anyplace that has nights running at 85 at midnight is F F'n N-O no for me.
