(2,047 posts)Although the notion that proper and legitimate nations must worship the correct god in the correct way in order to get that correct god's blessings on the nation goes back to the origins of the roman catholic church, it really gained popularity under pope Pius IX. He argued civil power isn't ideal unless the government embraces god's will They believe that the only god is their god and their worship in their only true church is the only proper way to do worship. Not all catholics strongly promote that notion. Some, even other popes are accepting of pluralism.
So, since then while the idea has waxed and waned among religious philosophers it's never gone away. It's hard to kill a bad idea built on the decision that your way is righteous and good for everyone, believers or not.
