Gingrich is running against...

1) the media (intellectualism, science, facts, education),

2) the Democrats (equality, civil rights, gay rights, religious tolerance, compassion etc.),

3) Regionalism (North, Northeast, Urban, City, Boston, New York etc.)

4) What Southern voters traditionally and historically hate most... the black guy.

5) Anger/resentment/chip on their shoulder

Add these 5 elements together and you have everything Gingrich needed to appeal to the south. Mark Sanford did not have these same elements in his immediate political realm. This is why there is a double standard regarding how South Carolina voters are viewing the two situations.
