NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) As we celebrate the nation's birthday and what it means to be an American, a U.S. Navy veteran who has lived in the U.S. for more than seven decades and considers himself as patriotic as anyone said the state of Tennessee is challenging his citizenship.
The state said he's not a U.S. citizen, but he provided documents that said he is.
David O'Connor has served his country and now the state is making him jump through hoops to prove he's an American. And in the meantime, they've taken away his license to drive.

Yes, they did. My parents did for my brother. My dad was in the Air Force and still had to do it.

Yep, my brother was born overseas. This poor guy now has uphill battle proving that his parents were citizens.

He tried to get a Real ID. My brother was born overseas. A foreign BC won't cut it.

Naturalized citizens have citizenship papers. He has neither the BC or naturalization papers.

If he had a passport, that would work as one of the documents instead of a birth certificate.

Doesn't sound like he has a passport because you need a birth certificate or naturalization papers to obtain a passport.

Nope...my brother was born overseas. A foreign birth certificate doesn't cut it. You need to register your birth here
