(12,599 posts)My late brother-in-law was what was referred to in those days as mentally retarded (a kinder era would have called him simple). He was one of the gentlest, kindest, friendliest people I've ever known, a hard worker, nearly always cheerful, someone who brightened the day of everyone he encountered. When they were growing up, my husband, who was a couple of years younger, spent a good portion of his youth in fights trying to protect his brother from the bullies and mockers and just-plain-mean assholes who targeted him because he was different, because he would not fight back, and because they could make him cry. So, for my husband, seeing the meanness directed at a gentle neurodivergent boy because he cried with pride in his daddy, is beyond infuriating and outraging. He's right there with you.
