(76,755 posts)it reminded me of when the young heavyweight champion Joe Louis defended his title against former champion Max Schmeling at Yankee Stadium in 1938. The US wasn't involved directly in WW2 yet, but tensions were high. Joe, looking to avenge his only loss, carried the weight of being only the second black heavyweight champion, and Schmeling for being associated (incorrectly) with nazi Germany. There was a lot riding on that fight, and the world was watching.
The great Joe Louis came out fast, and battered his helpless opponent against the ropes. When he landed a hard right hand to the body, people could hear Schmeling scream. That punch actually fractured his spine. You can see on the film his legs didn't coordinate after that punch ended the fight.
Last night, we were all treated to ringside seats, where we heard the felon screaming. Pure pleasure.
