Two injured, one severely in large Springfield apartment building fire [View all]
Two people were injured early Sunday morning when a large fire heavily damaged an eight-unit apartment building across the street from Snowhill Elementary School in Springfield.
Springfield Fire Division Battalion Chief Jeremy Linn said two occupants of the apartment building at 509-511 West Third were transported to Springfield Regional Medical Center with burn injuries. Linn said one of the injuries was minor, but the other was severe.

Chief Linn said about 20 people may have been displaced by the fire, and the Red Cross was on scene helping to arrange shelter for them.
Daylight revealed severe damage, with much of the roof of the building gone. Chief Linn said the building likely would not need emergency demolition. Some roof rafters that were hanging perilously were taken down, but the brick walls were structurally intact.
