the latter is as real as "big Girl" syndrome. Both bring on insecurities based solely on appearance. Many get past it and develop their full potential with those around them seemingly totally unaware of any supposed (societal) shortcomings, pun not intended. Others remain in constant pushback/lash-out mode. To me, it is a lot like what we saw as kids with vulnerable bullied kids defending the school bully to no end while denigrating everyone else. They seemingly show confidence with their ugly projection of others.

But, Maher totally lost me with his COVID-19 conspiracy/denial bullshit. No better than JFK JR. Maher can be funny at times, but there is always a lot of bullshit under the surface.
