6. I read once that the states that used to be part of Mexico

kept a lot of Mexican marriage law because they wanted to encourage women to settle there. Among there laws were some on community property, which said that a married woman was entitled to a portion of property in a marriage in case of divorce. A lot of eastern states didn't give women this protection until the late 20th century - if then.
