A comedic, dramatic film directed by Billy Wilder where the prisoners of war also resisted the Nazi's as best they could, where the Germans were malignantly capable, where Sgt Schulz was a competent Nazi, and where a turncoat cooperating with the Nazis posed a huge threat. William Holden plays Sgt Sefton a smooth operator who is a transactional businessman type (know the type) getting favors from the Germans who is suspected of being a mole. Col Hogan can be seen as a more heroic take on Sefton. In the end Sefton is a hero-- showing how even someone who is trying to do as best as he can for himself by making minor deals with the enemy, can still oppose evil at the crucial moment.
