Tufts University Says International Student Taken Into Custody By ICE, Visa Revoked

Federal authorities took a Tufts University student into custody on Tuesday night and revoked their student visa, according to Sunil Kumar, the school’s president.

“We have received reports that an international graduate student was taken into custody this evening by federal authorities outside an off-campus apartment building in Somerville,” Kumar said in a statement. “The university had no pre-knowledge of this incident and did not share any information with federal authorities prior to the event, and the location where this took place is not affiliated with Tufts University.”

Kumar said the Massachusetts university was also told this student’s visa was terminated, and school officials are trying to confirm if that is true. He said they had no additional information for now, and shared resources available to support students and their families.

“We realize that tonight’s news will be distressing to some members of our community, particularly the members of our international community,” Kumar said.

This detained student is the latest case of the Trump administration going after international students in its efforts to severely crack down on immigration. In its horrifyingly dystopian approach, the administration is vowing to detain and deport international students who have participated in pro-Palestinian protests, falsely claiming they are supporters of Hamas and therefore aligned with terrorist groups.

This happened earlier this month at Columbia University, where student protester and lawful permanent resident Mahmoud Khalil was arrested and baselessly accused of supporting Hamas. He is currently challenging his detention.
