I grew up in SC, and I'm pretty ashamed of the way some of my old friends and relatives act when they are racist or doing their tea party things.
On the other hand, there are some really good progressive people in the south and all across this country. I worked for Richard Riley in SC in the early 1980's, and he was a good Democratic governor. SC elected him in 1978 and reelected him for a second term before he became Clinton's Secretary of Education. I discovered that even SC can be "liberal" if the right people step forward.
I'm sure that Mississippi is the same way. If you keep on working, you'll have successes.
No one deserves a disaster, and I'm sorry to hear that some DUer's would be so callous.
