(59,501 posts)I never thought of it before 2004, but the way people get news has changed in such a way that it is far easier for the right to lie - and continue lying - long after they are proven wrong. Until recently, I thought of this in terms of elections.
If you think of it, what is completely unbelievable is that in 2004 and (2008/2012), they lied about some of the most thoroughly documented records that exist. In 2004, it was Kerry's service - where the official Navy record was disputed with absolutely no backup and the media even referring to it as "Kerry's version". In Obama's case, it was his birth certificate! You can't get more basic than that. Looking on right wing sites, it is amazing the number of posts that STILL takes the lies as fact.
Here, they are making up their own truth - and like with the elections - it continues long after the truth has been proven. I remember Kerry saying that he never expected the media to continue playing the liars - long after they had been given all the proof they needed to see that the liars had lied many many times. Not to mention, the newspapers, by and large, did pretty conclusively side with Kerry. It really showed how many people no longer had newspapers as their main source of news. In addition, unlike before cable, the TV news people get has become self selecting. Add in radio - that used to carry things like top 40 music - now is mostly right wing hate mongers.
