I had never considered that Boomers were actively selected to be led by conservatives, but that makes perfect sense given your parents' reactions to the Counterculture.
That said, and what you're missing, is that GenX isn't "young" any more. We're middle-aged, and we're still broke (many of us, anyway). It sounded like you were describing the Millennials in your post, and everything you say about them seems to match what I know about them, but they're still young. There's hope for them if we can turn our politics around.
Generation X ... not so much. For us, hope is running out, and it's hard to shake the feeling that we have been overlooked and forgotten.
