(10,440 posts)82 graduated from College? High School? By then, the world had already made the shift from Hippies and idealism to the Reagan and the selfish generation, the ones that are about 4 years younger than I am (my brother) and younger that have NOTHING AT ALL IN COMMON WITH ME. Then, everything started to suck. Unions. Gone. JOURNEY! The radio, RUSH Limbaugh. All of that. the TV< McDonald's, Star wars generation.
But the blame for the shit we are in falls squarely on the Greatest Generation. THEY voted Reagan in, My parents. They owned the business that crushed the unions. They cheered when the flight controllers lost their jobs and hate Gov't employees. They also had a strong belief in Christianity. Worst of all they fell for the propaganda on the TELEVISION. They believed that McDonald's made food, and that TIDE could clean better than anything and that Coke was good for you and if they add more chemicals to something it makes it healthier than if they had left in the natural ingredients.
Those people were in there 40's and fiftes when Reagan came down. The depression era people who did not like to spend money, especially on Gubmint workers, but worshiped it.
Those people are dying now and I think that we will see in the next ten years a strong shift away from religious anything and a more purposeful existence. A more art based world. More back to the land, less selfish. Now we are working toward something better. Burningman.(really you cannot count the influence this has had on people) All of the music festivals that happen all the time. Of course there will always be the 1% who are insulated from the world and the people that want to be them. They will never change, but the people who are in the world will be looking to do creative things.
