My grandparents left Sicily to find a better life. My parents won't move off the block.
For me, whenever an opportunity arose--London, Lima, Singapore--I jumped at it. Thankfully, my wife loves adventure as much as I.
For the past twenty years I've tried to stay close to home because of the children, with the occasional few weeks to a few months of travel. However, I know parents with young kids who bounce around periodically and the children are doing just fine.
Our kids are now almost independent and I'm awaiting a decision on a two-year assignment in Southeast Asia. Got my fingers crossed.
Giving people advice about moving here or there makes no sense if they are not equipped to live that kind of life.
