Getting supplies to Mars would be so expensive at the moment. If you could get supplies to a space station and have a dedicated cargo convoy, life on Mars will be possible. We aren't there yet.

Another problem - the time it takes to get to Mars - 150 to 300 days. Not exactly what I would call "on call." If something goes wrong, everyone dies.

Or they might all get eaten by ground-dwelling raptors. Where's Riddick when you need him?
