I am reading a book about the Irish potato famine in the 1840's. The conservative British parliament had the same attitude toward the poorest level of Irish people, just in slightly different words. The book is a heart breaking story, the lesson I see is that attitudes have not changed in all these years. So many people who are comfortable in their lives and are doing well do not want to help people who are in need. Here in the US, they prance around and spout Christian values, but they are selfish bigots.
