The worship of force by intellectuals is one of the besetting problems of the modern period; there is a real tendency for people who fancy themselves thinkers to swoon at the image of a strong man. The root of it is that many who imagine they value the life of the mind feel in their hearts they are ineffectual and incapable of engagement with the physical world.

"When idealists come down from their ivory towers, they generally head straight for the gutter."
